Serving the Glen Ellyn Area

Laura Alcantar, MA, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor with her master’s in clinical mental health counseling from Northwestern University. She earned her bachelor’s degree in public health from Northern Illinois University in 2002.

About Laura

Laura has devoted herself to promoting wellness for 20 years. After graduating from Northern Illinois University she pursued specialty training and managed a private practice in the field of Eastern complementary medicine known as Ayurveda. During these years, she helped clients navigate various health issues and attain wellness. As she practiced, her interest in mental health grew and she made the decision to extend her expertise to become a licensed clinical mental health counselor. Some of her areas of specialty include supporting clients with life transitions, relationships, new diagnoses, and coping with death and loss. She also helps clients work through issues of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders… developing  tools to live more functionally with these diagnoses.

Combining styles of psychodynamic, somatic (body-centered awareness), and emotionally focused therapy, Laura always considers  the impact of a person’s environment on their health. Laura is trained in Level one Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a mind-body modality primarily utilized for processing trauma via visualization and sensation processing.

Laura loves the outdoors and finds solace in her daily morning hikes through the woods and along the Fox River. She is a passionate flower gardener and lives with her husband, Luis, their two teenage sons, and her two fur kids, Jackson, and Fender.

Laura's approach to therapy

Laura believes that the foundation of deep therapeutic work begins with the client’s feelings of comfort and safety in the room. This is fostered by the relationship developed between client and counselor. To this end, Laura believes all of life is relational and that we heal on three levels: our relationship with our physical body and how we feel in our own skin; our relationship with our mind or, the way in which we think; and our relationship with the outer world, including the people in our past and present. At any time, one or more of these may be causing strain or difficulty in our lives. We navigate change through the collaborative exploration of what is needed to build, nurture, and/or release, that which  is standing in the way of peace and wholeness.
