About Lonn

Following years of pastoral work in various church settings, Lonn began his career in the field of Psychology as a Case Worker for a severely mentally ill population. He quickly began to see the connection between systemic societal issues and mental health. Later, while completing his Masters in Clinical Psychology, he interned at the Wheaton College Counseling Center, working primarily with college students and young adults. Here, he gained insight into the pervasive nature of mental health issues, no matter the demographic. For the majority of his years as a psychotherapist, Lonn worked at Heritage Professional Associates where he continued to formulate and solidify his approach to therapy.

Outside of the therapy office, Lonn enjoys a variety of hobbies and interests but gains particular satisfaction from very, very, long walks and a morning shot of espresso from his favorite coffee shop (Five and Hoek). Lonn is a fan of almost all sports but has a particular penchant for premiere league soccer--his favorite team being Liverpool.

Lonn's approach to therapy

A focus on the therapeutic space is core to Lonn's belief about the power of therapy to bring change, healing, and growth. This is a very sacred space that largely stems from the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. Lonn has been heavily influenced by the work of Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, and Susan Johnson who, when combined, create a unique range of non-directive and directive therapeutic stances. He applies these strategies based on the needs of the client and what evolves naturally within the therapeutic relationship. Lonn believes in the power of genuine curiosity, empathy, congruence, and respect when helping clients find the safety needed to move toward healing and growth.

Lonn works with all types of anxiety, depression, grief, existential issues, marital challenges, family conflict, life transitions, career and lifestyle choices, and addiction. Lonn works with individuals, couples and families, and has a particular passion to help couples find stability and increased intimacy using a combination of Sue Johnson's work and the Gottman's vast contributions to the field of couple's counseling. He has also worked extensively with high school, college, and young adult populations. Lonn is trauma informed and has been trained in mindfulness meditation, Prepare and Enrich for couples, and draws from a variety of therapeutic modalities including CBT, ACT, REBT, and EFT among others.
